Nouakchott Beaches
Despite not being known for its beaches, this thriving capital city has some undiscovered attractions that are well worth exploring.
Plage hôtel Al Ahmedi, the jewel of Nouakchott’s coastline, comes first. This well-known beach is the ideal location for sunbathing, swimming, and dining at one of the many beachside establishments while savoring some regional fare. Additionally, if you’re feeling daring, you can try a variety of water sports like jet skiing, kiteboarding, and surfing.
There are other beaches in the area besides Plage hôtel Al Ahmedi. Look into Plage de Nouamghar if you want a more private atmosphere. Locals love this uncrowded beach since it’s perfect for swimming and tanning. Additionally, Plage de la Présidence, which is close to the Presidential Palace, is a good place to go if you’re in the mood for some history.
Banc d’Arguin National Park
This protected area is not only one of Mauritania’s most beautiful spots, but it’s also home to some incredible wildlife and marine life that you won’t find anywhere else.
The Banc d’Arguin conservation area includes more than 12,000 square kilometers of land and water and is inhabited by an incredible variety of birds, fish, and other creatures. But, we’re really after the beaches, though! Some of Mauritania’s most stunning and tranquil beaches may be found in Banc d’Arguin.
Take, for example, the pink sands of Plage de Nouamrhar, where flocks of flamingos roam nearby. Or, if you’re looking for some serious solitude, head to Plage de Tergit, where the only sound you’ll hear is the gentle lapping of the waves.
Before you pack your bags and head to Banc d’Arguin, there are a few things you should be aware of. The park is a protected area, therefore you must first get a permit to enter. Second, keep in mind to respect the local wildlife by following the park’s visitor guidelines. Bring plenty of water, food, and sunscreen because the park doesn’t have many amenities.
Nouadhibou
This coastal town boasts some amazing beaches despite being less well-known than its neighbor, Nouakchott.
Cap Blanc Beach, which is the first beach we will talk about, is beautiful and serene. Here, the pure, white sand and pristine waters stretch for miles in every direction. Swim and, if you’re up for it, explore the neighboring Cap Blanc Lighthouse.
Next on our list is Plage de l’Amour – a beach that lives up to its name. This romantic spot is perfect for couples looking for a little R&R. The tranquil waters and breathtaking views make it the perfect place to unwind and soak up the sun.
However, Nouadhibou is more than just these two well-known beaches. There are many other places to discover, such as the undiscovered Plage de la Pelouse. Locals love this quiet beach since it’s a nice place to get away from the city’s bustle.

Tips for Visiting Mauritania’s Beaches
Okay, fellow beach lovers, it’s time for some useful tips on organizing the ideal beach getaway in Mauritania. Let’s start now!
- Let’s talk about the weather first. Be sure to bring plenty of sunscreen, hats, and light, breathable clothing because Mauritania’s coastline tends to be quite hot and dry. And if you’re planning a trip during the summer, be ready for some extremely hot weather. Therefore, bring a refillable water bottle with you to stay hydrated!
- Now, let’s talk transportation. If you’re planning to explore multiple beaches and regions in Mauritania, renting a car might be your best bet. But if you’re sticking to one area, taxis or local transportation will do just fine. And if you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can always rent a bicycle to explore the area at your own pace!
- It’s essential for ladies visiting a beach in Mauritania to dress modestly out of respect for the indigenous way of life. Avoid wearing anything too revealing, such as shorts, tank tops, or bikinis, and choose clothes that cover your shoulders, chest, and legs instead. Wearing loose-fitting, light cotton clothes, such as long skirts or maxi dresses, is an excellent choice for keeping cool in the hot, muggy weather while also showing respect for regional traditions.
